VILLA IVANCICH

This Villa of the Mocenigos in the present old San Michele was built in the second half ofthe 17th century for the noble family from Venice and was bombed to almostcomplete destruction in May 1944.
It lay opposite Latisana, on the right bank of the Tagliamento, and was a great red mansion having two white symmetrical smaller buildings with doric porches, round windows separated by baroque medallions on trabeations and statues everywhere.

It was used as summer residence by family Mocenigo and bought by Vincenzo Biaggini from Padua in 1870; during the First World War it became a military hospital and was destroyed by the bombings of the Second. Today only the walls and the little church remain to recall the past splendour of the building.

The architectural complex lying on the bank of the Tagliamento has a great artistic value and furthermore shows the changes the river has undergone during the last 500 years, that is the time gone by from the building of the mansion. If we consider the location of the historical centre of Latisana, situated on the opposite bank, it is obvious that after the villa was built the river has always remained between the two modern banks. Its riverbed was therefore very steady, also thanks to human activities.
